Once again, the town council meeting was well attended, despite the late hour. This seemed to be the norm now that the curse was broken. Everyone in Spellbound was invested in next steps and came to the meetings no matter what time they were held. It was a heartening display of community spirit, except for the complainers, of course.

“When will the regulations on shifting be enforced?” Marion Seaforth asked. The elderly gnome was a regular feature at the post-curse meetings. She’d taken to them like she was the mayor’s understudy. “I don’t need to see ferrets rolling around on my front lawn in broad daylight. It’s unseemly.”

“It’s my understanding that they like to scratch their backs on the grass,” Lorenzo Mancini replied. No surprise that the head of the werewolf pack and town council member would speak up on behalf of shifters.

Marion soured. “I don’t care if they like to bathe in honeydew and bask in the warm glow of the sun. I don’t want them in my yard in the middle of the day.”

Lorenzo arched an eyebrow. “Would you rather they roll around on their backs in broad daylight in their human form? Because that can be arranged.”

“Don’t get smart with me, young man,” Marion said, and I bit back a smile. “This council meeting is to air our grievances, and I’m airing mine.”

“And doing an excellent job, I might add,” Lorenzo said smoothly.

Marion shook a finger at him. “You can’t silence me with sweet talk, werewolf. I wasn’t born yesterday.”

“Clearly,” Lorenzo murmured.

I felt a light tap on my shoulder. “Is it always like this?” Ember asked.

I craned my neck to see the reporter and her editor seated behind us. “Pretty much.”

“Just checking,” Ember whispered.

“Any other new business?” Juliet Montlake asked. The Amazon’s effort to steer the conversation away from shifter regulations was obvious, yet very welcome. Relations between the different paranormal groups were good right now, and no one wanted to see it deteriorate.

“The coven has been entertaining visitors from its national headquarters,” Professor Holmes announced. He’d been sitting in Lady Weatherby’s place on the town council, as well as taking on the interim role as head of the coven. “They’re with us this evening, in fact.”

“Welcome,” Wayne Stone said. The troll offered a friendly smile to the assembled group at the front. “We hope you’re enjoying the fruits of our wonderful town while you’re here.”

“It’s been…interesting,” Rowena said, without returning Wayne’s smile.

“We hope the coven will pass the inspection with flying colors,” Maeve said. “As I’m sure you’ve heard, the witches and wizards played a huge role in breaking the curse.”

“They also had a huge role in obstructing the breaking of the curse, from what we understand,” Rowena said.

Maeve seemed taken aback. “There may be some truth to that, but Emma Hart was crucial to breaking….”

“As far as national headquarters is concerned, Emma Hart is not an official member of the coven,” Rowena interrupted.

The banshee glared at the High Priestess and, for a moment, I worried that she’d break into a wailing cry of frustration.
